Maintaining your composites

You’ve invested in your gorgeous new smile, now it’s time to look after your investment!

You need to attend the practice regularly for health checks and clean and polish appointments. We always recommend airflow clean and polishes for composite bonding as this lifts staining and helps maintain excellent oral health.

You also need to look after your teeth at home. This will extend the lifespan of your composites, ensure they look fabulous, and maintain oral wellbeing.

FREE hygiene education at Carew Dental

Book your FREE Hygiene Education Appointment at Carew Dental! We are offering all our composite bonding patients a free education appointment with one of our hygienists to teach you how to maintain your composites at home.

This appointment will give you practical advice for maintaining your composites, and get the best from your new smile!

Home routines: brushing and flossing

Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day. Follow our Oral Health guides to learn how to brush and floss like a pro!

Staining

Think about staining! Composite is porous and can stain, so if you eat and drink a lot of high coloured foods and drinks you might find your new teeth stain. Same goes for smoking.

Our top tips are to eat and drink less of these foods, rinse after eating, and visit the practice more regularly for cleans. Patients who smoke or have trouble with staining can visit us every 3 months to remove stains and improve oral health.

Think about a water flosser

Water flossing is a fantastic addition to your home oral health routine. We recommend Water Pik water flossers and have found they reduce staining and improve oral health.

💡Water flossing can be messy – try a cordless flosser and water floss in the shower!

Preventing chips

When we receive calls from distressed patients with a chipped composite, we understand it feels like an emergency and will arrange your repair appointment as soon as we can. But did you know that 9 out of 10 times you could have avoided the drama altogether!

Many composite chips are caused by the patient mistreating their composites and are completely avoidable! To look after your composites you first need to recognise that composites are not as strong as natural teeth, and treat them with respect.

Take the following steps to avoid chipping your composites:
