Tips for managing your fixed braces during treatment

Here are some of our top tips to help you look after and maintain your oral health and cope with wearing fixed braces 24/7 throughout treatment.

What to do the first days after having your braces fitted

It is easy to become fed up in the first few days of treatment. Your teeth and face might feel achy from the pressure, your cheeks sore, and you won’t feel comfortable biting and chewing. DON’T worry, everything will settle very quickly!

Here are a few tips to make the first days a little easier!

Brushing

You should continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day and use the orthodontic brush we gave you when you had your braces fitted.

💡DON’T brush too hard – you can damage your teeth, gums and remove the tooth colouring from the wires.

Flossing

You should continue to floss daily but use a wax-treated orthodontic floss for ease.

Staining

Think about staining! The bands that keep the wire sitting in the brackets are prone to staining. High coloured food and drinks such as curries, red wine and tomato sauces will stain the bands. You’ll need to avoid these foods during treatment.

💡If you’re desperate for a staining food, have it the night before a review. This means you can enjoy your meal then have the stained bands changed at your appointment the following day!!

Think about a water flosser

Water flossing is a fantastic addition to your home oral health routine. We recommend Water Pik water flossers and have found they reduce staining and improve oral health.

💡Water flossing can be messy – try a cordless flosser and water floss in the shower!

Eating during treatment

It’s your responsibility to look after your braces during treatment and what you eat matters! If you eat foods that damage your braces this can have a detrimental impact on your treatment.

You must avoid hard foods such as crusty loaves and raw apples and carrots, as well as sticky foods such as toffees and sweets!
